Module 2 Post

I have been working with an infant room where the ages range from six weeks to 3 years.  The dental clinic here at Head Start has been going full swing.  I was talking with the family advocate of the room I'm observing and she let me know how important the dental clinic has been.  One little boy had to have an emergency examination because his front two teeth have bottle rot in them.  They told the mother that his two front teeth have to be extracted immediately.  The little boy is only two and it was a good thing that the dental clinic was there because his mother wasn't even brushing his teeth because it was so painful for him. That service is so important because the mother probably would have never taken him to a dentist.  And since she wasn't brushing them his other teeth could have ended up in a terrible condition also.  I also spoke with one of the social emotional therapists that comes to the classroom.  He was telling me about the success stories he has had in his work.  There is a little boy in the room I'm observing and he has made great progress since he started in December.  I still need to meet with someone or go to the WIC office to get some information about them and their services.  I also have met with the site manager of Head Start to get some information on the history of Head Start and their mission statement.

  1. Thank you so much for sharing that story; it caused me to tear up knowing that a child had to live through such excruciating pain. A dental clinic in a head start facility? I have never heard of that before, but I am also not familiar with their program either. Do you know when the dental clinic was instituted?

  2. Wow that is terrible I want to thank you for sharing that information about that dental clinic. This is the first time I heard of this service being in a childcare program. I work for the YMCA and we offer many things, this might be something we need to focus on. Have you tried to Google some information about WIC and I think that you can find a lot about that Program on the web. At my center the children have to brush their teeth two times a day, also floss. How can you give to this center or parents to help or how can you help privent this not to happen?

  3. As a site director, before the children are allowed to enter the center, they are required to present dental and medical records. With most centers doing this, we can catch these type of problems earlier on and correct them. Did this head start ask for medical and dental records before the child is enrolled? Did the child have dental and medical records on file at this headstart?

  4. Wow, that is very sad to here about some of the children. I have never heard of dental clinic in side of care center but it sounds like it is being used. I am glad they had the clinic there for the child and I am sure many children are getting help.
